Brunswick, MAINE (February 11, 2009) - With the latest snow fall leaving over a foot of fresh powder on the ground many are anxious to get outside and enjoy all the winter sports Maine has to offer, but in the excitement and thrill of riding down the slopes we sometimes forget the preparation and safety measures necessary to avoid injury.

At a recent event at Brunswick's Select Physical Therapy, professionals in Nutrition, Conditioning, and Orthopaedics came together to hold a workshop about keeping safe and healthy on the slopes this winter. Kate Hawley, RD, LD spoke on nutrition, focusing on the importance of hydration and balanced eating throughout the sport season and the New Year. Therapists at Select Physical Therapy demonstrated the significance of conditioning the body to handle the physical stress a person takes on when participating in winter sports along with showing how tools like the Wii Fit can be used to aid in that conditioning. To wrap up, Dr. F. Lincoln Avery of Advanced Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine spoke on common injuries occurring on the slopes and ways to avoid them, focusing on preventing ACL tears, the #1 injury for adult skiers.

An avid skier and attendee, Kate Bachman, said "It was particularly helpful to learn that, if I were going into a fall, what to specifically do to avoid tearing my ACL and the nutrition information allowed me to better understand what a truly healthy diet includes. Workshops like this one would be enormously beneficial to any winter sports enthusiast."
